Discussion on Realignment of UHSAA Regions:

Principal Guymon explained the process of the realignment procedure, which happens every two years. The Board of Trustees determines where each school is placed based on the number of students attending. LHS has been in the 4A classification for the last two years, they put us in the 3A classification going forward, but determined us to be a “bubble school” which means we can request to be moved up to 4A or stay in 3A. Ultimately the Board of Trustees makes the final decision.

Principal Guymon asked Council members to split into groups to discuss the pros and cons of each classification. The following arguments were made:

Pros for 3A   Cons for 3A
  • LHS could be more competitive

  • Travel costs higher
  • Perceived equality

  • Busing costs
  • Improve morale/school spirit

  • More students may choose to go elsewhere
  • Higher student recruitment

  • Less coach potential
  • Don't need to purchase new banners

  • More coach potential

Pros for 4A   Cons for 4A
  • Competing schools are closer

  • Too hard to compete with bigger schools
  • Familiarity with other school students

  • Impact to non-sports UHSAA
  • Less missed class time/shorter travel

  • Depth of athletes participating
  • More exposure to recruitment opportunities

  • Less student support with lower win rate
    (17% win rate in 4A)
  • Travel costs lower

  • More coach potential
