Dear Student,
Thank you so much for your interest in becoming a Sterling Scholar.
According to the Deseret News,
“…the purpose of the Sterling Scholar Awards is to publicly recognize and encourage the pursuit of excellence in scholarship, leadership, and citizenship of high school students in the state of Utah. The program is developed to focus attention on outstanding students in order to recognize them publicly as well as award scholarships and tuition waivers from participating institutions. The Sterling Scholar Awards Program seeks to commend and encourage excellence among all nominees. . .”
You are eligible to apply to be a Sterling Scholar if you are going to graduate the 2026 school year. After you apply, teachers and or administrators will select nominees who will hold the title at Logan High School (“Logan High School Sterling Scholar in __________”) for their category, and be eligible to compete at the regional and state levels.
Sterling Scholar nominees should “have extraordinary scholarship scores as well as service in leadership and community service/citizenship opportunities at their high school.” Specifically, if scholars make it to the regional or state level competition, they will be judged on Scholarship (20%), Category Expertise (20%), Leadership (20%), Community Service/ Citizenship (20%) and Interview (20%).
Categories for Sterling Scholar nomination include English, Mathematics, Social Science, Science, World Languages, Computer Technology, Skilled and Technical Sciences Education, Family and Consumer Sciences, Business and Marketing, Speech/Theatre Arts/Forensics, Vocal Performance, Visual Arts, Instrumental Music, and Dance.
If you think you may qualify and would like to apply, please submit to Mrs. Wheeler by the first Friday in September the following required documents:
The following highly recommended documents will enrich your application and your chances:
Each applicant should prepare for a 2 minute interview with the sterling scholar committee
The following categories have specific requirements:
Instrumental and vocal music applicants need to prepare a 2 minute solo
English applicants should present a writing sample
Visual Art applicants should submit sample photos of at least three items
Dance applicants should be prepared with a video link to a dance at least two minutes in length
You are welcome to apply for more than one category. You must, however, turn in separate applications for each category. Be aware also that you will be required to meet deadlines for portfolio work and required to be available no matter what for interviews should you be selected. If you have priorities in the months of February and March that could keep you from interviewing should you be selected for the region or the state, you should not apply.
In closing, thank you so much for your interest in becoming a Sterling Scholar Candidate. We look forward to reading your applications.
Sincerely,
The Logan High School Sterling Scholar Committee
